Mark 4:35 On the same day, when evening had come, He said to them, "Let us cross over to the other side." 36 Now when they had left the multitude, they took Him along in the boat as He was. And other little boats were also with Him. 37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat so that it was already filling. 38 But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, "Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?"
39 Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, "Peace, be still!" And the wind ceased and there was a great calm. 40 But He said to them, "Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?"
Jesus and His disciples were in a boat heading to the other side of the Sea of Galilee. As they crossed the sea a great storm came upon the waters. This caused the disciples to be frightened and fearful. But what about Jesus? What was He doing? We find He was sleeping in the bottom of the boat He wasn’t worried at all.
Realize this was a violent storm because some of His disciples were fisherman by trade and no doubt got caught in storms before, but this storm was so bad it frightened them also. They awoke Jesus and said, “we’re going to die! Do something!” Jesus got up rebuked the wind and waves and everything calmed down.
Sometimes we go through storms that are so bad we become frightened and like the disciples, we have a hard time realizing Jesus is with us. During these storms, there are a few things we need to remember.
Jesus is right there in the storm with us and has promised to never leave forsake us.
Hebrews 13:5 For He Himself has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you."
Next, we are told not to be fearful.
Isaiah 41:10 Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.'
What does this scripture say: fear not, do be not dismayed or stressed. I am your God, I will strengthen you and I will help you – meaning He will surround, protect and come to our aid. I will uphold you by My hand – meaning our deliverance will come from His own hand.
With this assurance, we can be confident that God will lead us through all of our storms. Are going you through a rough storm? I want to encourage you: don’t fear, Jesus is with you!
